MACAO—Las Vegas Sands Corp. recently completed its worldwide volunteer effort to build 100,000 hygiene kits this year for social enterprise Clean the World to help improve the health and well-being of populations in need. Kits assembled by Sands China Ltd. and community volunteers at The Venetian Macao will benefit Children’s International, who will deliver the 35,000 kits to families in need in the Philippines.

Sands China’s volunteer event is one of a series of hygiene kit builds at LVS’ properties in Macao, Singapore, Bethlehem and Las Vegas between July and December in 2016. The effort is part of LVS’s global corporate citizenship program, Sands Cares, and its ongoing partnership with Clean the World to support its mission of promoting good health and well-being around the globe through improved access to soap and hygiene education. This is the third consecutive year Las Vegas Sands has built hygiene kits for Clean the World, and the 2016 build events will bring the total number of hygiene kits created with Las Vegas Sands to 400,000.

“Our series of hygiene kit builds over the past three years have helped protect thousands of vulnerable people around the world from hygiene-related illnesses and death, while promoting a sense of well-being and dignity,” said Ron Reese, Senior Vice President of Global Communications and Corporate Affairs at Las Vegas Sands. “It’s united our team members with volunteers in our local communities to support a truly remarkable mission.”

Just One Part of Company’s Commitment

The annual Las Vegas Sands Global Hygiene Kit Build is one component of the company’s long-term support of Clean the World. Since 2011, LVS and Clean the World have recycled more than 190 tons of waste from LVS properties into more than 1.6 million bars of soap. In 2014, LVS announced an unprecedented $1 million donation to Clean the World, helping the organization to double its production of recycled soap and expand service into new areas.

Shawn Seipler, Founder and Executive Director of Clean the World, said, “Las Vegas Sands has been an incredible partner for Clean the World, and the annual hygiene kit build shows the deep commitment the company and its employees make to our mission. We’re so grateful to the company and community volunteers for the generous gifts of their time, enthusiasm and hard work to help those in need.”

Each hygiene kit includes soap collected from Clean the World’s hospitality partners, including LVS properties around the world, and then recycled through Clean the World’s soap sterilization and re-manufacturing process. Other amenities in the kit include shampoo, conditioner, a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Winnie Wong, Vice President of Corporate Communications and Community Affairs for Venetian Macau Limited, said, “Sands China is pleased to be working together with volunteers from the Macao community again this year on this worldwide initiative. Our hotels have had great success working with Clean the World to recycle soaps for its important hygiene effort, and Sands China is glad to again be a part of this year’s global build with Las Vegas Sands.”

Volunteer Explains Participation

The success of last year’s event is what brought one volunteer back to support this year’s build: “I find that I’m happiest when I’m helping others, and I believe that building these hygiene kits for Clean the World is an important service to my fellow man. And knowing that there are other volunteers around the world that have worked on this too—that gives it even more meaning, thinking about so many people working together on this.”

A total of eight local Macao community associations joined Sands China team members in Tuesday’s hygiene kit build at The Venetian Macao: the Association of Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers of Macao (ARTM), the Women’s General Association of Macau, Macau Special Olympics, Fuhong Society of Macau, Centro Pastoral da Areia Preta—Community Service, Centro de Dia da Ilha Verde, Richmond Fellowship of Macau, and the Salvation Army.

LVS’ partnership with Clean the World is part of the company’s global corporate citizenship program, Sands Cares. Announced in April 2014, Sands Cares manifests the company’s core corporate social responsibility focus: supporting people in the company and the hospitality industry, making local communities where LVS operates a better place to live and reducing environmental impact on the planet. Sands Cares provides a cohesive approach to corporate and property-level giving and support in local communities where LVS operates to address the most pressing issues.
