PORTLAND, ORE.—The historic Heathman Hotel, Portland’s premier, full-service luxury hotel, was recognized by PacifiCorp recently for its efforts toward becoming a green hotel. PacifiCorp honored the Heathman as well as 14 other Oregon businesses that have worked with Energy Trust of Oregon on increasing energy efficiency and committing to sustainable practices.

PacifiCorp (known as Pacific Power in Oregon) hosted approximately 100 Portland-area CEOs from their service territory in Oregon. Among the notable list of speakers talking about the future of energy were: Pat Reiten, president of Pacific Power; Greg Abel, chairman and CEO of PacifiCorp and president of Mid American Energy Holding Company; and Margie Harris, executive director of Energy Trust.

“The Heathman is very proud of its ongoing commitment to the environment,” said Chris Erickson, general manager of the Heathman Hotel. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the excellent resources and guidance PacifiCorp has provided throughout the process. Being recognized by them is truly an honor and we look forward to building on our commitment in the coming year.”

Environmental Responsibility

The four-star, 150-room historic hotel has been working on upgrades to its heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems for nearly one year, and is currently working on energy-saving upgrades for hotel electricity, including changing all light bulbs hotel-wide to compact fluorescent. The Heathman expects to fully complete the upgrades by early 2008. With help from its energy service partners, Viking Energy Services and Environmental Controls, the Heathman will save an estimated 525,000 kilowatt hours minimum of electricity and 15,197 therms of natural gas each year; on a monthly average the hotel will see a savings of 50 percent of the hotel’s energy costs.

The first phase of upgrades not only reduces energy and natural gas costs but also improves comfort for guests, improves operation and diagnostic tools for staff, and increases property value.

In April, the Heathman introduced their Go Green package, through which the hotel plants a tree for every package sold in conjunction with the Portland-based Friends of Trees, a nonprofit organization that inspires community stewardship of the urban forest by bringing people in the greater Portland area together to plant and care for city trees and urban natural areas.
