DANVERS, MASS.—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE) have awarded Osram Sylvania a 2011 Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award in recognition of its continued leadership in protecting the environment through energy efficiency. This is the tenth consecutive year the company has received an Energy Star award.

Osram Sylvania is committed to promoting energy efficiency among consumers, businesses and within its own operations, company-wide. Since becoming an Energy Star partner in 1999 and receiving its first Energy Star award in 2002, Osram Sylvania has made advancements in energy saving lighting technology.

“Receiving our tenth consecutive Energy Star Partner of the Year Award for Sustained Excellence continues to be a great honor for Osram Sylvania,” said Jennifer Dolin, Osram Sylvania manager of sustainability and environmental affairs. “We’ve taken tremendous pride in developing innovative products for our customers—whether that is extending lamp life, introducing new color temperatures or qualifying our first integral LED product line to carry the Energy Star label.”

Push to Educate Consumers

In 2010, the Osram Sylvania 40 for the Future Earth Day challenge campaign showed consumers how easy it can be to “green” their lifestyles and encouraged a collaborative effort to make energy efficiency top-of-mind amongst consumers. By participating in the challenge, participants were entered for a chance to win daily and weekly prizes, and a grand prize of a carbon-neutral, three-night Disneyland vacation.

For businesses, Osram Sylvania demonstrates how energy efficient lighting can not only save businesses money, but help them effectively conserve energy and reduce their carbon footprint. One such example is the work of Osram Sylvania and its Sylvania Lighting Services subsidiary with Staples, Inc. Over the past several years, Sylvania Lighting Services has helped the world’s largest office products company conserve 10,193,770 kWh of energy and reduce carbon emissions by 15,647,437 pounds—the equivalent amount produced by 1,367 cars—by retrofitting 690 retail store interiors and the outdoor area lighting at Staples’ headquarters.

“With help from Osram Sylvania and Sylvania Lighting Services, Staples has been able to reduce our stores’ utility and maintenance costs and reduce our carbon footprint by employing the latest in energy efficient lighting technologies,’ said Bob Valair, Staples director of energy and environmental management. A new video and case study highlight the lighting company’s work with Staples.

Internally, Osram Sylvania has adopted energy-saving business practices in all its facilities, pledging a 10 percent reduction in green house gas (GHG) emissions between 2006 and 2011 and implementing a new company-wide employee green team.
