PORTLAND, ORE.—February 14 was Oregon’s birthday. So, what does one get a state that has everything? In 2014, visitors to Oregon contributed more than $27,000 to enhance communities across Oregon through an innovative philanthropy program created by Travel Oregon and Sustainable Travel International. Funds will be directed to projects throughout the state that improve the environment, support local culture and enrich the destination through the Oregon Travel Philanthropy Fund (OTPF).

OTPF is the first statewide program of its kind. The goal of the program is to improve experiences for visitors and locals by connecting them to participating businesses that directly improve and enhance Oregon communities. Since 2012, the fund has raised nearly $70,000.

“Travel Oregon not only strives to create real economic impact and meaningful jobs in every corner of the state, but we also want to preserve and enhance this beautiful place we call home,” said Todd Davidson, Travel Oregon CEO. “The projects we chose to support represent some of the best work being done to improve local economies, build community, and showcase the culture that makes Oregon a premier destination for visitors and Oregonians alike. As more and more businesses join us in giving back to Oregon, we hope to see the fund grow to at least one million dollars every year.”

Seven Tourism Regions Benefit

OTPF supports one project from each of Oregon’s seven tourism regions. Recipients of the 2013 to 2014 Oregon Travel Philanthropy Funds are: Bend Paddle Alliance; Camas County Mill Schoolhouse Project; The Fossil Educational Foundation; Hood River Area Trail Stewards; the Human Access Project; and The Nature Conservancy for its Table Rocks Interpretive Program and its Netarts Bay Native Oyster Restoration Plan. “Today’s travelers are increasingly conscientious and seeking authentic, fulfilling experiences,” said Jeremy Sampson, Vice President of Partnerships and Operations at Sustainable Travel International. “The Oregon Travel Philanthropy Fund allows visitors to leave behind a lasting, positive legacy in this beloved destination. The projects they support will develop and enrich the destination experience for residents and visitors, both now and in the future.”
