Ecova Report Says Lodging Industry Decreased Energy Consumption 5 Percent from 2008 to 2012

SPOKANE, WASH.—Ecova, a total energy and sustainability management company, recently released its second annual Big Data Look at Energy Trends: 2008-2012 report. The report draws from Ecova’s Big Data Warehouse, which contains more than 2.5 billion points of data from more than 700,000 facilities. This year’s analysis, specifically pulled from 150,000 facilities, including 2,200 lodging establishments, shows a decrease in total electric consumption intensity of 8.8 percent (5 percent decrease in lodging sector) and a 6 percent decrease in peak demand. Rhode Island Governor Signs Nation’s Second Mattress Recycling Bill into Law

ALEXANDRIA, VA.—On July 15, Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee signed legislation into law that would create the United States’ second mattress recycling program. The International Sleep Products Assn. (ISPA) worked closely with Rhode Island Senate Majority Leader Dominick Ruggerio and House Environment and Natural Resources Committee Chair Representative Arthur Handy to craft legislation that will recycle used mattresses in Rhode Island. DURHAM, N.C.—The biggest barrier restaurants in Durham, N.C., face in achieving “zero waste” is a lack of affordable composting and recycling options, a new study conducted at Duke University has found.Zero waste encourages the reuse of all materials.
