More Milestones to Report–That’s Mostly a Good Thing

Milestones are a good thing—well, most of the time. Last week I celebrated a birthday. I will let you guess how old I am. Let’s just say I have not yet gotten to the point where I am reading the instructions on Grecian Formula, but its location in the grocery store is memorized. In addition to my birthday, I celebrated another milestone last week—the addition of newsletter subscriber 8,000. I don’t know who it was exactly but if you signed up for the newsletter last week, you have my permission to feel a little more important than you usually do.

To the industry publication giants out there, 8,000 subscribers is a small number. To Green Lodging News, however, it is significant because the number comes just 21 months after its launch. Last month, the Green Lodging News website drew more than 20,000 different visitors in one month for the first time (28,282 total visitors) and generated more than 78,000 page views. This month, those numbers will certainly be higher. Thank you to everyone who faithfully reads Green Lodging News. If you have a chance to forward your newsletter to a friend or colleague, please do so and encourage that person to “opt in” using the form on the Green Lodging News home page.

If you are a supplier to the industry and have been reluctant to invest in Green Lodging News advertising, I strongly encourage you to do so. The greening taking place in our industry is legitimate, significant and our role is to match smart buyers with smart, green companies. Speaking of advertising, this week Green Lodging News will launch a new e-mail product called “Green Supplier Spotlight.” Here is how it will work:

Every Wednesday, except when a Green Supplier Spotlight slot has not been sold, Green Lodging News readers will receive an e-mail that details a specific green product or service offered by a vendor. Each Spotlight will focus on just one company. Each vendor will have an opportunity to provide a photo along with up to 250 words of text. Each Spotlight will also include an e-mail link and link to the supplier’s website.

Green Supplier Spotlight will be distributed using the same service used to distribute the Green Lodging News newsletter. That is good news for vendors because they will know exactly how many readers click through their ad campaigns. Green Supplier Spotlight will benefit Green Lodging News readers because they will have even more access to green products and services that reduce costs, increase profitability and help the environment. GLN Welcomes Green Hotel Certification as Directory Partner

Green Lodging News welcomes Green Hotel Certification as a Green Product & Service Directory partner. Green Hotel Certification offers an independent, on-site and auditor-based certification program for the hospitality industry.

Based on internationally recognized documents provided by the United Nations, European Union as well as ISO (9001/14001), the certification concentrates on three areas: Energy and Environment, Corporate Responsibility and Conservation. The online program eliminates paperwork and keeps the property up-to-date at all times.

Earth Day Plans?

If you are planning any Earth Day activities at your property or anywhere else, please call or write with the details. I would like to mention some of the best plans in next week’s column.

An ’Obscene’ Phone Call

Last week while in Las Vegas at a conference, I stayed at a resort about 10 miles west of the Strip. Because my cell phone was not picking up good reception, I used the guestroom phone. Maybe I am naïve but I was shocked at the cost. My bill showed $57.63 for 21 minutes. Next time I will just step outside for better cell reception.

As always, I can be reached at editor@greenlodgingnews.com.
