LAS VEGAS—MGM Resorts International returned for the sixth consecutive year as the presenting sponsor of the 34th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade which was held on Monday, January 18 in downtown Las Vegas.

Hailed as one of the nation’s most popular annual parades celebrating the ideals and life of Dr. King, thousands were expected to line the Fourth Street parade route to commemorate Dr. King’s legacy of promoting equal and human rights. The theme for this year’s parade was “Living the Dream: The Movement Continues.”

“The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade offers MGM Resorts a unique opportunity to stand alongside our community as we celebrate a great man’s enduring legacy,” said Jim Murren, Chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International. “Dr. King continues to be an inspiration as we strive to uphold the ideals of equality he championed.”

Wendell P. Williams, Founder of the nonprofit Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee, says this year’s parade, though limited to approximately 100 entrants, provided a variety of entertainment, including floats, exotic vehicles, marching bands and dancers. Public officials and representatives of area nonprofit organizations were also expected to participate in the event.

A Day for Celebration

“This parade is an excellent way for the community to unite together annually in honor of Dr. King’s extraordinary life, and to celebrate the freedoms won because of his fight for equal rights,” said Williams.

In 2000, MGM Resorts became the first company in the gaming industry to adopt a formal diversity initiative. Management ranks among MGM Resorts’ 62,000 employees include about 42 percent women, and 38 percent minorities. Additionally, the company spent over $189.5 million with diverse-owned suppliers, contractors and service providers in 2014 as part of its supplier and construction diversity programs.

MGM Resorts has supported the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade since 2003. Employee volunteers from MGM Resorts were expected to turn out in full force to march in the parade with an MGM Resorts float created by the company’s events department.

The parade was part of a series of events honoring Dr. King and leading up to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, including a volunteer cleanup event involving MGM Resorts employees at Lone Mountain Park.
