The two conferences focused specifically on green lodging that took place in 2014 have yet to be rescheduled but there are a number of opportunities coming up to attend events at which there will be opportunities to learn about various aspects of lodging and restaurant sustainability. First, HD Expo, set to take place at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas from May 13 to 15, will include four Green Voice Conversations organized by NEWH as part of its Green Voice Conversations series. Topics will include Biophilic Design, Futuristic Materials, Detoxifying Hotel Interiors, and Smaller Footprint Trends and Guest Experience. NEWH is also planning a Student Green Scholarship Awards luncheon on the first day of the Expo. I will be attending HD Expo and will report on it here in Green Lodging News. Click here for the HD Expo schedule.

Immediately following HD Expo, across the country at McCormick Place in Chicago, the National Restaurant Assn. Show will take place from May 16 to 19. Like HD Expo, the NRA Show will have many exhibitors offering products and services to help you green up your operations. On the agenda at the NRA Show will be education sessions with the following titles: “True Tales of Unexpected Triumph: The Bumpy Path to Sustainability;” “Tales from the Trenches: Sustainability and the Gritty Side to Savings;” “Do Good to Do Well: How Charitable Causes Better Bottom Lines;” “Making Foodservice Sustainable by Design;” and a number of other sessions with topics ranging from trimming food waste to genetically engineered foods.

The Better Buildings Summit will take place in Washington, D.C. from May 27 to 29. There will be a Commercial buildings track that will include building tours and a focus on topics from high-impact technologies to reducing energy consumption in restaurants and kitchens. There will also be a Hospitality Meet-Up on the first day of the Summit.

HITEC in Austin, Texas

As of press time the folks behind HITEC had not included anything on the agenda related to sustainability. There will be some exhibitors there offering the latest in energy management technology. This year’s HITEC, June 15 to 18, will be held at the Austin Convention Center (Texas).

NeoCon, slated for June 15 to 17 at The Merchandise Mart in Chicago, has a number of educational sessions planned to help you better address building occupant health. One session, “Warning: Toxic! Demystifying the Red List,” will provide a history of the Red List of “worst in class” materials and chemicals, as determined by the Living Building Challenge. Another session will also focus on healthy building products.

The annual Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) Sustainable Meetings Conference will take place at The Westin Peachtree Plaza-Atlanta from June 17 to 19. Featured speakers this year will include Laura Turner Seydel, Chair, Captain Planet Foundation, and Derreck Kayongo, founder, Global Soap Project. The theme of this year’s conference is “Power to Change.” Breakout sessions at this year’s event will focus on Suppliers, Planners, and Communities. One Suppliers panel will focus on Hotels & Venues: Going Green Best Practices and include panelists representing Marriott, Starwood and InterContinental Hotels Group. I will be attending the Sustainable Meetings Conference this year. Be sure to watch for coverage in Green Lodging News.

A future column will address our industry’s fall activities. Got an event to share? Be sure to send information to editor@greenlodgingnews.com.
