LONGBOAT KEY, FLA.—Longboat Key Club & Resort announced the redesign of its Library Meeting Room, which showcases the talents of local craftsmen and manufacturers, and features a multitude of sustainable and environmentally friendly elements. The most recent application, the redesign of the Library Meeting Room, boasts River Reclaimed Heartwood flooring, paints containing zero or very low VOC (volatile organic compounds), soy-based foam cushions in the new chairs, energy efficient LED lighting and an Energy Star rated television.

The Reclaimed Heartwood Flooring, from Goodwin Heart Pine Company, is a Florida based flooring company that specializes in recovering original growth logs from Southern rivers and through a unique engineering process refurbishes the wood to be virtually indistinguishable from newly harvested wood flooring. This process saves trees from being harvested and helps promote stewardship of forests as a natural resource.

Beaufurn, the company that crafted the dining and lounge chairs, uses environmentally friendly FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood sources and the Bio-Flex foam in the cushions is soy-based and yields a 23 percent reduction in total energy demand and a 67 percent reduction in non-renewable energy sources to create it.

The Forest Stewardship Council is an independent, non-government, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. It was established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, and the subsequent negative environmental impact.

Benjamin Moore Paints Used

The zero and low VOC Benjamin Moore paints that were used in the project are LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) compliant, as recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Sarasota based wood craftsman, Dale Rieke, teamed up with Designer Marble & Granite, another local firm, to create the dining table, shelving and credenza.

“I am extremely proud of our newly redesigned Library Meeting Room, not just for the style and richness of the room, but because of the unique value it brings to the resort as a whole given its environmentally friendly redesign and the use of sustainable and energy saving elements,” said Michael Welly, general manager of Longboat Key Club & Resort. “Our resort has been recognized numerous times for our commitment to the environment, our sustainable practices and our support of community resources. Moving forward, all our efforts will be focused on incorporating as many green and sustainable elements as possible into our construction, refurbishment and maintenance projects.”
