Just Two Weeks Until IHMRS/BDNY Events at New York City’s Javits Center

NEW YORK—There are just two weeks until the many green activities begin at this year’s Hospitality Leadership Forum, International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show (IHMRS) and Boutique Design New York (BDNY). Events will be held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center November 8 to 11 in New York City. Recently, three NEWH Green Voice Conversations were added to the extensive schedule of sustainability-focused sessions. The Green Voice Conversations will take place as part of BDNY.

The first Green Voice Conversation will take place Sunday, November 9 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. The topic will be, “Where Does Your Wood Come from and Why it Matters: Understanding Responsible Sourcing of Wood and Forest Management Certifications.” The guest speaker will be Kathryn Fernholz, Executive Director of Dovetail Partners. The moderator will be David Mahood, LEED AP, GGP, Olive Hospitality Consulting.

The second Green Voice Conversation will take place Sunday, November 9 from 1:30 to 2 p.m. The topic will be, “Better Design through Nature’s Chemistry: Why Nature Should be Your Model for Buildings and Products. The guest speaker will be Mark H. Dorfman, MSPH, Biomimicry Chemist, Biomimicry 3.8. David Mahood will moderate this session.

The third Green Voice Conversation will take place Monday, November 10 from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. The topic will be, “Sustainable Hospitality from a Purchasing Viewpoint: The Role of a Hospitality Procurement Company in Supporting Sustainable Practices.” The guest speaker will be Gus Sarff, President, GS Associates, Inc. David Mahood will moderate this session.

Hospitality Leadership Forum Event

The American Hotel & Lodging Association’s Sustainability Committee has added a session entitled, “Measuring Hotel Carbon Footprints Using HCMI Methodology,” to the lineup of sessions at the Hospitality Leadership Forum which leads up to IHMRS. The session will take place from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, November 8.

Pat Maher, partner, The Maher Group, LLC, will moderate the panel discussion that will include: Randy Gaines, Vice President, Engineering, Housekeeping, Laundry Operations, Americas, Hilton Worldwide; Fran Hughes, Head of Programmes, International Tourism Partnership; Eric Ricaurte, founder & CEO, Greenview; and Nancy Scanlon, Ph.D., CHE, Associate Professor, Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, Florida International University.

Those attending the session can expect to learn about the new industry-wide common unified language for hotels reporting carbon footprints on meetings and/or hotel stays. According to AH&LA’s Sustainability Committee, “You’ll learn how this new methodology has provided transparency and clear communications for the growing body of corporate clients who require such information as part of the annual RFP process. You will learn strategies to start applying immediately, particularly when responding to Request for Proposals (RFPs).

Five Additional Green Sessions Planned

The session is in addition to five other green panel discussions to be held during the Hospitality Leadership Forum or at IHMRS. The following is the schedule for the additional discussions:

On Saturday, November 8, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Crafting a Career in Sustainability in Hospitality & Tourism—Sustainability Trends in Hospitality Education session will take place. Featured panelists will include: Jeanne Varney, Lecturer at the School of Hotel Administration, Cornell University; Nancy Loman Scanlon PhD, Associate Professor School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Florida International University; Rachel J.C. Chen, PhD CHE, Director and Professor, Center for Sustainable Business and Development, The University of Tennessee; and Diana Catalina Beltran Gonzalez, Manager, Learning & Delivery, School of Hospitality Operations, Wyndham Hotel Group. The moderator will be Glenn Hasek, Publisher & Editor, Green Lodging News.

The second seminar, Hotel Energy Management All Stars, will take place on Sunday, November 9 from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Featured speakers will include: Rishi Shah, Asset Manager, Wyndham Philadelphia-Mount Laurel; Charles A. Smith, CEO, Hotel Sustainability Solutions, Inc. for the Hilton Concord (Calif.); and Samuel Huertas, owner, Biohotel Organic Suites, Bogota, Colombia. The moderator will be Glenn Hasek, Publisher & Editor, Green Lodging News.

The third seminar, Gone Platinum! A First-Time Ever Gathering of Leaders of Three LEED Platinum Hotels, will take place on Sunday, November 9 from 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Speakers will include: Lynee Sauer, Business Manager, Woodbine Group, for Hotel Skyler, Syracuse, N.Y.; Jim Treadway, General Manager, Bardessono, Yountville, Calif.; and Dennis W. Quaintance, CEO of Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants and Hotels, for the Proximity Hotel, Greensboro, N.C. The moderator will be Dina Belon, Director of Hospitality Strategic Alliances & Development, Mindclick Global, Inc.

Four Certification Programs Represented

The fourth seminar, The Power of Green Certification—Updates from Lodging’s Leading Certifiers, will take place on Monday, November 10 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Speakers will include: Steve Ball, Director of Business Development, Green Key Global; Evadne Giannini, Principal, HospitalityGreen, for the Green Concierge program; Katie Hopkins, Associate Director of Outreach & Communications, Audubon International; and Arthur Weissman, CEO, Green Seal. The moderator will be Glenn Hasek, Publisher & Editor, Green Lodging News.

The fifth seminar, Waste Management Champions Making a Difference, will take place on Monday, November 10 from 3:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Speakers will include: Shawn Seipler, CEO/Executive Director, Clean the World; Sam Stephens, Executive Director & CEO, Global Soap Project, Inc.; Jessica Stracener, President, Global Sustainability Solutions; and Walker Lunn, CEO, Grid Waste. The moderator will be Glenn Hasek, Publisher & Editor, Green Lodging News.

The 99th annual IHMRS will run Saturday, November 8, through Tuesday, November 11, 2014. Following a full day of conference (Hospitality Leadership Forum) and networking activities on Saturday, November 8, the IHMRS will feature three full days of exhibits from Sunday, November 9, through Tuesday, November 11. The market will present 650 exhibitors and attract more than 16,000 industry professionals. This year’s show, for the second year in a row, will feature a Hospitality Green Division.
