As published on Green Lodging News, The Rezidor Hotel Group just published its Responsible Business Report 2016. For those of you not familiar with the company, Rezidor’s current core brands include Radisson Blu—the largest upper upscale brand in Europe—and Park Inn by Radisson. Radisson RED is another Rezidor brand. The report, 61 pages long, describes the most important corporate responsibility and sustainability aspects of the company’s operations. Last year was a good one for the company with it being named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for the eighth straight year by Ethisphere. The Rezidor Hotel Group also wrapped up its five-year Think Planet target to save 25 percent of energy. It achieved energy gains by optimizing the lighting, heating and air-conditioning systems, focusing on energy efficiency in daily operations, and investing in new technologies. From 2007 to 2016, the company reduced water used per individual guest by 29 percent. The carbon footprint per guest night has been reduced from 22.8 kilograms CO2e in 2013 to 21.4 in 2016 for Rezidor-managed and leased hotels.

Other Highlights from the Report

  • In 2015, Radisson Blu launched the Blu Planet initiative, which focuses on conserving and protecting the Earth’s limited supply of fresh water. During September 2016, Radisson Blu hotels supported Blu Planet by a multitude of initiatives related to water mindfulness. One example: the international water charity Just a Drop receives a donation for every 250 towels that guests choose to reuse.
  • The first Tesla Powerwall to be installed in a Belgian business is in the lobby of the Radisson RED Brussels, storing energy from the hotel’s 20 solar panels. It provides power to the video wall in the lobby and to the hotel’s energy grid. Thanks to the Powerwall, the Radisson RED solar energy is available 24/7.
  • In 2016, employees came from 155 nationalities. A total of 43.9 percent of employees are women; 56.1 percent are men. Of the total workforce, 14 percent is outsourced labor, mainly in housekeeping and banqueting departments. Thirty-nine percent of employees are covered by collective bargaining agreements.
  • A total of 212 hotels participated in Earth Hour.
  • Responsible Business Action Month was marked for the 13th consecutive year with organized activities, volunteering, and raising cash and in-kind donations.
  • Last year the company introduced a group-wide initiative to retrofit LED lights in all of its hotels.
  • Fifty-three hotels now have an organic food grinder to produce liquid organic waste.
  • Seventy-nine percent of Rezidor hotels are currently eco-labeled. The company’s target is to have all of its hotels eco-labeled.
  • Across the Group, 35 percent of hotels serve Fairtrade products and 48 percent serve organic food.
  • In 2016, The Rezidor Hotel Group amended its supplier code of conduct to include obligations for suppliers and the broader business community to take a stand against human trafficking and modern slavery.
