CANCUN, MEXICO—Tres Ríos Nature Park has obtained the permits from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to launch the Integral Project for Coast Rehabilitation of the Tres Ríos Nature Park, a project that will be developed in 2016.

Gabriel Santoyo, Director of Sustainable Development at the Tres Ríos Nature Park, explained that the project contemplates the rehabilitation of one mile of beaches and dunes and the construction of four artificial reefs between 328 and 492 feet long that will act as barriers to protect mangroves and the beach from storms. The type of structures to be used, Santoyo explained, will allow waves to pass but at a reduced speed. He also stated that Cancun and the Riviera Maya’s growth allows for the constant creation of jobs and better life standards for thousands of Mexican families that have migrated from other regions of the country.

“However, the growth of tourist and urban infrastructure has also created pressure on the sustainable use of the environmental resources of the area, thus becoming a challenge that the new tourist development must face and solve,” Santoyo added.

Project to be Carried Out in Various Stages

Conscious of the challenges that the region faces to find new ways of using natural resources in an intelligent, efficient and innovative manner, Tres Ríos Nature Park adopted a model of tourist development based on establishing and applying solid environmental principles. Santoyo explained that the Integral Coast Rehabilitation Project was created jointly with scientists from the Engineering Department of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and will be carried out in various stages during the following year. “Our plan for the future is to solve and adapt to the negative effects that the climate change has on our coast,” he explained.

The Integral Coast Rehabilitation project includes a sustainability monitoring system to guarantee the operation of deluxe resorts that are responsible with the environment such as Hacienda Tres Ríos, the archetype of the Sunset World Resorts & Vacation Experiences hotel chain, designed and constructed with the right technologies and taking the steps necessary to develop the resort while protecting the environment. In this way, Tres Ríos Nature Park has become a national and regional model for sustainable tourism development, as acknowledged by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico.

“We have worked hard to care for the flora and fauna of the jungle and the mangrove, but our vision is not limited to land ecosystems, the coast ecosystem encompasses a lot more,” Santoyo said.

Tres Ríos Nature Park is located in 326 acres of land out of which 148 acres are a natural reserve with 131 animal species, 120 plant species, and 10 sinkholes, as well as over 50,000 plants re-cultivated in close to five acres of deforested jungles impacted by hurricanes.
