LAS VEGAS—On May 15, two finalist teams presented concepts for the 8th annual Radical Innovation Award in Las Vegas. Green Air and Hotel 2020 were selected by an esteemed jury—out of nearly 100 entrants from 28 countries. The hotels are meant to propose new solutions for real problems within the hospitality industry.

This year, the jury prepared the contestants to present live at the Hospitality Design Expo where opposing jury members and conference attendees considered the feasibility of the future development of the concept. The creator of the Green Air project received the grand prize of $10,000 following a live vote by attendees of the conference.

“Green Air proposes a realistic answer to a serious urban challenge,” said John Hardy, CEO of The John Hardy Group and founder of the global Radical Innovation Competition. “The voting audience identified with the concept as being urgent, feasible and executable.”

Competing Finalists

Green Air Hotel—grand prize, $10,000 winner
Jury Team: Simon Turner, Barry Nidiffer and John Hardy
Submitter: Lip Chiong, Studio Twist
Country: China
Proposal: With the current crisis of air pollution crisis in China and hotels trapped in outdated generic buildings in urgent need of an upgrade, this hotel has interior green lungs where greenhouse gardens act as air filters to remove harmful toxins in the air and replenish it with oxygen.

Hotel 2020—grand prize, $5,000 winner
Jury Team: Michael Medzigian, Jena Thornton and Wing Chao
Submitter: Natasha Bajc, Code Design Studio
Country: USA
Proposal: Furnished with 3D-printed interiors, this hotel offers guests an augmented reality where the user can interact with the space through computations. The 3D-printed parts, reinforced with the latest composite materials, not only enhances the “buildability” of structures, but also takes into account different emotional states of guests to increase the impact of the design.

S_LOT—Honorable Mention, $1,500 prize
Submitters: Natalie Kwee and Caio Barboza, 2B-1H
Country: USA
Proposal: Short for “small lots”, this modular system will occupy unused vertical parking structures, allowing each guest to easily modify their experience using interchangeable amenities. The pods can be shifted up and down to create a variety of facades, and the system can be expanded upon or shrunk depending on the urban site it inhabits.

Sky Lofts on the Boardwalk—The Student Winner – $1,500 prize
Submitted by: Evelyn Choy and Evelyn Hartojo
School: University of Melbourne
Country: Australia
Proposal: With the abandonment of monorail beamways in Sydney, Sky Lofts is the upcycling of these structures into pedestrian- and bike-friendly boardwalks with prefabricated accommodation, cafes and reception lofts.
