Getting Geared Up for New York’s HX, BDNY

Almost every year since 1989 I have attended what is now known as the HX: The Hotel Experience trade show at the LEED Silver Javits Center in New York City. Now in its eighth year, Boutique Design New York (BDNY) will be held adjacent to HX. In recent years BDNY has outgrown HX but HX has remained a very relevant show, especially when it comes to sustainability and green products. Together, HX and BDNY will feature about 1,000 exhibits.

This year I have two connections to HX. First, I will be moderating a panel discussion on Monday, November 13 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. entitled, “2020 Vision—Lodging’s Leaders Set the Sustainability Bar Higher.” Sustainability leaders at America’s leading hospitality companies will report on their companies’ current, 2020 and beyond goals in the areas of energy, emissions, water and waste reduction, as well as green building, community involvement, staff training, and procurement.

Emissions reductions are more critical than ever now—a new report from the United Nations World Meteorological Organization warns that global carbon dioxide levels rose at the fastest rate ever measured in 2016—reaching heights unseen in at least 4.5 million years.

Marriott, IHG, Ecolab Represented

The HX panel will include Denise Naguib, Vice President, Sustainability & Supplier Diversity, Marriott International, Inc., Gardner Jackson, Assistant Vice President, the Nalco Water division of Ecolab USA Inc., and Lindsay Wilkinson, Interim Director of Corporate Responsibility—Environmental Sustainability, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). Don’t miss this panel if you are attending HX. Each of these companies have many exciting and impactful initiatives in progress.

My second connection to HX this year: I participated as a judge in the HX: The Hotel Experience Editors’ Choice Awards for Best New Products and Services. Among the many entries this year were many new products and services to help you reduce energy, water and waste. You will be able to find these on the HX trade show floor—everything from sensor faucets to electric scooters to prep washers to amenities to a 2-in-1 humidifier and air cleaner.

I will be reporting on HX and BDNY during and after the shows. Be sure to watch for coverage on Green Lodging News. And, if you will be at the shows, be sure to stop by and say hi following the panel discussion.

Green Lodging News Adds PathoSans Case Study to Website

Green Lodging News has added a PathoSans case study to its website. The case study details the implementation of the PathoSans ElectroChemically Activated (ECA) Solution system for On-Site Generation (OSG) of cleaning and disinfecting products at the Marker Hotel in San Francisco. With the PathoSans system, staff can make their own cleaning solutions on-site. PathoSans also reduces the hotel’s eco-footprint by eliminating shipping, storing and disposal of most conventional cleaning chemicals, replacing 90 percent of such products formerly used there.

The Marker’s nearly 40 housekeepers clean and disinfect every room and public area daily—including 11,000 square feet of meeting space—using PathoCide, a people-friendly disinfectant. It’s also used daily in back-of-house areas.

Using tap water, salt and electricity, the PathoSans system makes both PathoCide and PathoClean®, a Green Seal certified cleaner, at a fraction of the cost of conventional cleaners.

PathoClean is used for both daily and deep cleaning, including carpet care. Both solutions are ready-to-use, dispensed into storage tanks, and have a 30-day or greater shelf life.

How to Search on Our Website

Similar to other search engines you find online, a search using one word will produce articles with that word included. If you would like to search for something that is more than one word long—ozone laundry, for example—you will need to put quotation marks around the words or phrase. Ozone laundry would then be “ozone laundry” in the search.
