SYOSSET, N.Y.—Emerald Brand announced a strategic partnership with Totally Green, producer of the ORCA Anaerobic Aerobic digestion machine. This alliance will allow Emerald Brand, a provider of more than 230 sustainable disposable products, to deliver Totally Green’s ORCA organic digesting solution to its foodservice and facility clients and help sites in New York City become compliant with the new food waste and Styrofoam laws that are set to take effect this July 2015.

The ORCA machine digests organic food waste, turning it into nutrient rich water and virtually eliminates organic food waste from corporate foodservice environments, restaurants, food manufacturers and catering halls. “Since Law 1162-A has been passed and is effective July 1, 2015, we are finding clients are proactively looking for an on-site food waste solution, which we are now able to deliver cost-effectively and efficiently along with our Emerald Brand cost-neutral sustainable disposables solution,” said Ralph Bianculli Jr., Vice President of Emerald Brand.

Law 1162-A mandates that food facilities including manufacturers and cafeterias over a certain square footage can no longer throw organic food waste in the trash and must divert it by either composting or using an on-site anaerobic digester. According to PlaNYC, New York City sends four million tons of waste to landfills annually, 30 percent of which is food waste. This law will radically reduce the amount of food waste that would previously end up in landfills.

“Partnering with innovative and like-minded leaders like Emerald Brand will allow us to reach thousands of proactive decision makers who understand the importance of sustainability,” says Spiro Frangos, Totally Green’s Director of Strategic Accounts.
