BOULDER, COLO.—Eco-Products announced that it has become a Certified B Corp, earning the coveted distinction for meeting “the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability.”

Eco-Products, a leading brand of food service packaging made with renewable resources and recycled content, joins a growing community of B Corp companies working to solve environmental and social problems. These companies are not competing just to be the best in the world, but to be the best for the world.

“We’re excited and proud to announce our certification as a B Corporation because it represents everything we stand for as a change agent in our industry,” said Ian Jacobson, President of Eco-Products. “At Eco-Products, our mission is to advance the cause of Zero Waste—specifically keeping wasted food, and the packaging that frequently accompanies it, out of landfills—while helping our customers to be better stewards of the environment. We want to be a driver for positive change in the world, and becoming a Certified B Corp validates our progress on that goal.”

B Corporations—the “B” stands for “Benefit”—are companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab as working toward a better world. Unlike traditional corporations, Certified B Corporations agree to consider the impact of their decisions on workers, suppliers, the community, consumers and the environment. They have all scored highly on an extensive assessment of their approaches to governance, community, and environment, as well as a review of their overall business models.

Growing Global Movement

As the B Corp website notes: “B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk…Individually, B Corps meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability, and aspire to use the power of markets to solve social and environmental problems. Collectively, B Corps lead a growing global movement of people using business as a force for good.”

Eco-Products sells a variety of single-use cups, plates, napkins, trays, straws and take-out containers, all made from renewable resources and post-consumer recycled content. Its customers include professional sports teams like the Minnesota Twins, venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and campuses like the University of Colorado at Boulder. Other customers include hospitals, corporate campuses, convention centers, and a wide array of independent food service operators.

Eco-Products is one of the first companies selling disposable food service products to become a Certified B Corp. While Jacobson is proud of the distinction, he knows there’s much more work ahead.

“Our ultimate goal is to reach the point where the use of our products is regenerative to the environment,” Jacobson said. “We’re not there yet, but it’s something we work toward every day.”
