LAS VEGAS—Durkan, the hospitality brand of The Mohawk Group, recently launched a new fiber system, SmartStrand Contract. Made with DuPont Sorona renewably sourced polymer, SmartStrand Contract is specially engineered for hospitality carpeting to offer performance, sustainability and luxury. Durkan is offering both tufted and printed options made with the fiber, including Merit Select’s Lavish Luxury for guestrooms and suites. SmartStrand Contract utilizes triexta fiber—recently designated as its own fiber class by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

“Environmental and social innovation is redefining our future—not just of our organization, our customers’ businesses or the design industry, but more importantly, of the planet,” said Lee Blair, senior vice president, Durkan. “It is a vital mission to contribute to a healthier generation and we’re doing so through cutting-edge products like SmartStrand Contract. We recognize our customers’ challenges to strike the right balance between creating a high-performing, welcoming aesthetic while also meeting evolving eco-requirements. With SmartStrand Contract, we have a unique opportunity to give our customers both by taking a proven, sustainable product in other markets and making it accessible for hospitality interiors.”

Durkan is specially engineering SmartStrand Contract with DuPont Sorona for hospitality use with sustainable design in mind. As part of this process, the fiber undergoes strict testing to ensure its adherence to design standards and codes, while still maintaining its comfort and aesthetic appeal.

Performance Not Sacrificed

DuPont Sorona, the branded name for the triexta fiber used in SmartStrand Contract, is the first to be recognized by the FTC as a separate fiber class in more than 50 years. With stain and soil resistance inherent to the fiber, it is naturally designed to perform while minimizing the impact on the environment.

As a bio-based product, the polymer in SmartStrand Contract is made from 37 percent renewably sourced ingredients by weight, reducing the use of petroleum ingredients. Supporting a sustainable manufacturing process, it requires less energy and reduces CO2 emissions over traditional products. Environmentally smart from beginning to end, SmartStrand Contract complies with LEED Credit MR 6.0 for rapidly renewable materials and is fully recyclable at the end of its useful life.

With its uniquely linked molecular structure, SmartStrand Contract resists crushing and matting, while providing a superior comfort factor. Superior stain and bleach resistance is engineered into the fiber—an advancement over  traditional fiber options—allowing soil and stains to be repelled without added topicals or treatments. With permanent stain protection inherent to the fiber, it will never walk, wear or wash off.
