OAKLAND, CALIF.—Everyday a tsunami of plastic hangers streams into landfills—93 million a day according to HANGD, an environmental coalition against the rising numbers of virgin plastic hangers finding their way into municipal dumps. That results in 34 billion plastic hangers every year and growing, enough to fill almost 20 Empire State Buildings.

And they don’t do it quietly. They leach benzene, a carcinogen, and bisphenyl, a hormone disruptor into our ground water. And they do it for a very long time, estimated up to 1,000 years. All for a simple, one-use plastic hanger.

“Virgin plastic is a terrible material to make a one-use retail hanger out of,” says Ditto Sustainable Brand Solutions founder and CEO Gary Barker. “More and more major clothing retailers are shipping their clothing to the United States already on plastic hangers. And because each garment has its own hanger, there is no reuse for it once the garment is sold. The result is up to 85 percent of these plastic hangers end up in landfills. It’s a tremendous waste.”

Recyclable Ditto Ecological Hanger

To reverse this trend, Ditto, a green product design and manufacturing company, engineered the Ditto Ecological Hanger which is completely recyclable at the store or in the customer’s home. Made of compressed paper fiberboard, Proterra, the Ditto Hanger is rated to hold over 20 pounds and is designed to replace the wasteful, toxic and single use plastic retail hanger. Tests show Ditto Hangers ship up to 20 percent more garments per container and fit over 50 percent more clothes on retail display rods, offer marketing and advertising add-ons not possible before and are zero-waste.

“We’ve completely reimagined the retail hanger to bring to it multiple efficiencies and values not possible with plastic hangers,” Barker says. “Simply put, with all the shipping, sales, marketing and environmental add-ons of the Ditto Hanger, there’s no reason to ever use the tired old plastic retail hanger again.”

The Ditto Hanger is already used in major retail stores around the globe. Ditto clients include Adidas, the Gap, REI, Starwood Hotels, Vionics, Whole Foods, Hydraulic, Maurices and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Ditto was awarded Acterra’s Business Environmental Award for Environmental Innovation and the California Product Stewardship Council’s Green Arrow Award. Ditto is a B-Corp.
