The public relations team behind Starwood Capital Group’s eco-luxury 1 Hotels & Resorts is beginning to release new information about three 1 Hotels currently in development. The first two properties—in New York City’s Central Park and Miami Beach—are scheduled to open this fall. The third property will be located in Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn, N.Y., and will open next year. All of the 1 Hotels will be LEED certified and every hotel will feature a farm fresh restaurant consistent with the brand’s core environmental values.

In 2006, Starwood Capital Group created SH Group, a hotel brand management company that owns the environmentally-focused 1 Hotels & Resorts brand. Long-time readers of Green Lodging News may recall seeing the first articles about 1 Hotels in 2007. At that time 1 Hotel projects were announced for Seattle, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Cleveland, and Vancouver Island, B.C. The timing could not have been worse as the recession killed any development plans. It was a little more than a year ago that Starwood Capital Group launched 1 Hotels & Resorts once again. Kudos to Barry Sternlicht, chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital Group, for not giving up on a great idea.

In the latest announcement about the first three 1 Hotels, the names of the chefs at the hotels’ farm-to-table restaurants were announced. Jonathan Waxman, Tom Colicchio and Seamus Mullen will open the Central Park, Miami Beach, and Brooklyn Bridge Park 1 Hotels restaurants, respectively. In an announcement about the chefs, Sternlicht said, “Their shared commitment to offering a restaurant experience distinguished by responsible culinary practices and techniques is central to 1 Hotel’s mission—celebrating nature and reminding us of our obligation to be socially responsible.”

More Information Coming Soon

There is not a lot of additional information currently available about 1 Hotels & Resorts. I was told that much more will be revealed in a month or so. What we do know is that the 1 Hotel & Residences South Beach is the result of the renovation of a 1970s building. It will feature 334 hotel rooms, four swimming pools including the largest pool in South Beach, lush landscaping, a spa and very large fitness center, private beach amenities and a variety of entertainment and dining destinations. As the first branded residential property tied to the new 1 Hotels brand, the project will also include 163 private residences.

Using reclaimed and repurposed materials the Central Park location will be 18 stories and feature 229 rooms. The 10-story, 193-room hotel in Brooklyn will feature a stepped façade of stone and metal, sculpted to maximize the sweeping views of lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge and New York Harbor. Guests will enjoy direct access to Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85-acre sustainable waterfront park stretching 1.3 miles along Brooklyn’s East River shoreline. The hotel will include a rooftop terrace, banquet and meeting space, an outdoor pool, spa and fitness center and retail outlets.

Having a company like Starwood Capital Group invest in green development is huge for our industry. 1 Hotels & Resorts is one of a growing group of distinctly green hotel brands that now includes Element, CityFlatsHotel and Adoba Eco Hotel & Suites.

The new 1 Hotels are sure to bring new energy and excitement to the South Beach, Central Park, and Brooklyn Bridge Park neighborhoods. Creating signature farm-to-table eateries with prominent chefs will certainly make the hotels dining destinations.
