FOREST, VA.—Attaining the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) certification for BESt (Building Environment Standards) buildings with eco-friendly operations and infrastructure represents a tremendous commitment to the environment and sustainability. As a recipient of this certification, the Victoria Conference Centre (VCC) in Victoria, British Columbia continues with initiatives to provide an even cleaner environment for employees and guests.

Recently, the VCC installed NanoSeptic surfaces, produced by NanoTouch Materials in Forest, Va., on high traffic touch points throughout the facility. NanoSeptic products have a continuously self-cleaning surface that is “always on,” oxidizing organic contaminants 24/7 without the use of chemicals or diluted poisons. In addition to NanoSeptic skins for door handles and other touch points, NanoTouch Materials also produces a line of portable NanoSeptic surfaces for the travel and hospitality industry.

“The NanoSeptic travel mat, customized with their brand, is a promotional item that is actually useful and genuinely appreciated by the traveler,” says Mark Sisson, co-founder of NanoTouch Materials. “The fact that it extends their brand wherever their guests travel, and provides the traveler with a cleaner surface that can be used on a hotel vanity or airplane tray table, is truly unique.”

Safe and effective, the NanoSeptic surface sets the standard for a new generation of surfaces that are continuously self-cleaning.

A Way to Reduce Chemicals, Toxins

“The hospitality industry is certainly becoming more and more eco-conscious, so we look at ways for self-cleaning surfaces to take that a step further,” says Sisson. “When it comes to environmental issues, many of our customers have a very progressive attitude. Part of that effort is to reduce the amount of chemicals and toxins used in cleaning, reducing exposure to these harmful products for employees and guests. In addition, providing the NanoSeptic travel mat means guests won’t use a towel to rest their toothbrush or other personal items on the hotel vanity, increasing sustainability by reducing laundry.”

These products are also printed, which provides visual communication, letting people know where the cleaner places to touch are.

“Most facility cleaning is performed by a highly trained and professional team, yet their efforts are largely invisible,” says Dennis Hackemeyer, NanoTouch co-founder. “With NanoSeptic surfaces, guests can actually see that the facility is taking extra steps to promote cleanliness. And the branded travel mats that our customers give away or sell, provide a portable version of that visibly clean surface outside their facility.”

“We are excited to be working with The Victoria Conference Centre,” says Hackemeyer. “Their emphasis on health and sustainability aligns perfectly with our mission to provide cleaner, healthier places in which to live, work, and play. And it’s very satisfying to know that by making clean more visible, our products have a positive effect on people’s perception of their environment.”
