QUEBEC CITY—At the annual Québec City Chamber of Commerce awards gala held recently at the Centre des Congrès de Québec, Château Mont-Sainte-Anne received the Fidéides Grand Prize in the Sustainable Development category, recognizing the establishment’s work to continuously improve its policies and processes in assuring the highest standards in environmentally responsible hotel management. When the Roy family acquired Château Mont-Sainte-Anne in 2005, they committed to managing and developing the hotel resort on the outskirts of Québec City with the best environmental and responsible business practices.

Château Mont-Sainte-Anne was the first independent hotel in Quebec to obtain the 4 Green Keys certification in 2007. The Chateau’s objective is now to become the first major resort hotel in Québec to be obtain the 5 Green Key Eco-Rating certification from the Hotel Association of Canada in recognition of leadership and commitment to environmental protection.

In 2007, the Chateau appointed Nadja Tanner as director for environment management and put in place a sustainable development program; including an environmental policy and a procurement policy that promotes regional and environmentally sound products.

With cooperation of Takt Etik, the Château produced its first annual Eco-Report, which provides details on results achieved, the objectives being targeted and the action plan to meet those objectives. Environmental performance is evaluated using very specific indicators for each of five components: waste management, energy management, water management, air quality management and hazardous materials management. Complementing the plan is a customer and employee awareness program.

Since 2007, Château Mont-Saine-Anne has spared no effort to host ecologically responsible (carbon-neutral) conventions. The Chateau has reduced its waste materials and energy consumption by more than 10 percent over the last year and the objective for this year is to reduce by a further 10 percent to 20 percent with the recent introduction of composting and geothermal energy.
