As publisher and editor of Green Lodging News I am often privy to inside information about companies or those who lead companies. Some of what I know you would not believe if I told you. I have learned who not to trust, who has a short temper and who is quick to the trigger with the threat of a lawsuit when things do not go their way. I have been yelled at by vendors for reasons you would not believe and deceived by some who are considered the top green lodging leaders in our industry. I have learned that just because a company or person is in "green" lodging does not necessarily make that person truthful or easy to deal with. I have seen greenwashing over and over, even at trade shows such as Greenbuild. On several occasions I have seen vendors steal ideas or content from other vendors.
At the New York hotel show this year, one dispenser vendor told me that a competitor had stolen his company's product designs, violating his company's patents. Some things I would rather not know. Perhaps I should write a green lodging "tell all" book some day? Maybe when I am at the age when I am too old to care about being sued?
The good news is that 99 percent of the encounters I have with industry leaders and vendors is positive and that gives me hope. So many people genuinely care about the environment, reducing waste, and minimizing water and energy consumption. That sunshine is something I need to remember more often--especially on days when I witness the darker side of green lodging.
Can you relate to my experiences? If so, I would love to hear from you. Share your comments here.
