I am surprised nobody came up with this idea sooner--an app for green travel. It is not for the entire United States; it is just for Orlando, Fla. Authored by Kimberly Button, the new Orlando Green Travel app (Sutro Media, $2.99), according to its publisher, is “the only travel resource of its kind to showcase the attractions, accommodations, restaurants, shopping venues and spas that work to minimize their eco-footprint while maximizing enjoyment for travelers in one of America’s most popular cities.” “Green travel is no longer just about camping in the woods or having to give up what you love while on vacation,” said Kimberly Button, author of Orlando Green Travel, as well as a Green Living expert for TV, a veteran travel journalist, and founder of greenWell.
“In today’s world, green travel can include luxury spas, world-class dining and unique destinations,” Button adds. “It’s about finding the businesses that are reducing their environmental impact while also providing travelers with the fun and excitement that they desire on vacation.”
With more than 120 entries and more than 900 photos, Orlando Green Travel features green travel options including: all 24 Walt Disney World resorts, which are Florida Green Lodging certified; The Ritz-Carlton Spa, which offers a Eco-Rooftop Hammock Experience with a zero-gravity massage surrounded by an organic herb garden; and Napa, at the Peabody Orlando, which serves up California wine country-inspired cuisine using 90 percent local ingredients from farms within an hour of the restaurant.
A green travel app makes sense not only for Orlando but also for other green travel hot spots such as Boston, San Francisco, Portland (Ore.), etc. If Button is smart, she will expand her idea soon to other green destinations.
