The number of lodging establishments certified as green using the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification system now stands at 89 with the recent announcement by the InterContinental San Francisco that it has earned LEED Gold (see article). So far in 2011, two hotels have earned LEED certification. In 2010, 47 hotels earned the LEED honor after 24 in 2009 and just eight in 2008. Four hotels have earned LEED Platinum, 33 have earned LEED Gold, 33 have earned LEED Silver, and 18 have earned basic LEED certification. California remains the state with the most LEED certified properties with 21, followed by Colorado and Georgia with six.
Eighteen projects have earned LEED for Existing Buildings, five for Commercial Interiors, and 66 for New Construction. The number of LEED registered properties now stands at 1,067. The majority of those properties have registered for LEED for New Construction. There are currently 69 projects in California that have registered for LEED. The next busiest states: New York with 42 and Florida with 35 registered projects. The companies with the most registered projects: Marriott with 49, Starwood with 40, and Hilton and InterContinental Hotels Group with 36. Nineteen convention centers are now LEED certified, the most recent being the Los Angeles Convention Center which was recertified in October 2010.
