HONOLULU—Ala Moana Hotel has installing an INNCOM system to reduce its environmental footprint. The system automatically reduces cooling and energy consumption by using sensors to monitor when guests leave their room. The energy management system was installed in each of Ala Moana Hotel’s 1,176 guestrooms.

“With the new INNCOM system in place, Ala Moana Hotel is making strides to complete its green energy master plan,” said Dave Lawrence, general manager of Ala Moana Hotel. “Receiving a rebate from Hawaii Energy is a win-win for both the hotel’s Association of Apartment Owners, who funded the project, as well as guests who wish to stay in touch with the environment while on vacation.”

Ala Moana Hotel’s new energy management system features front door sensors, lanai door sensors and a wireless network to tie everything together with the hotel’s property management system. The system recognizes when guests check in and check out, setting the temperature to conservation levels to save energy.

The $125,800 rebate was provided by Hawaii Energy, the state’s energy conservation and efficiency program implemented to help reduce Hawaii’s dependence on imported oil. The rebate will be awarded back to Ala Moana Hotel’s Association of Apartment Owners and will help to offset the system’s $800,000 cost.

To stay on track with Ala Moana Hotel’s green energy master plan, Ala Moana Hotel has retrofitted $500,000 worth of energy efficient lighting. The hotel is also meeting its sustainability goals by tinting all of the windows on the Diamond Head and makai sides of the building to conserve energy. The hotel further shows its commitment to the environment by using LED lighting in the meeting rooms and public areas with plans to install more LED lighting in the future.
