Riding the Wave of Everything Green, GLN Eyes Expansion in 2009

With this being the last Green Lodging News e-newsletter of 2008, I would like to wish all of you a very happy and prosperous new year in 2009. The end of the year is the perfect time to reflect on the year that has passed and set goals for the year ahead. It is also an ideal time to stop and say “thank you.” So, to all of the readers, guest writers and advertisers who supported Green Lodging News in 2008, thank you very much! Green Lodging News would not be possible without you.

For Green Lodging News, 2008 was a year of growth. It was only the second full year for the online publication. During that time, weekly newsletter circulation grew from 7,200 to 9,300. It is a safe bet that newsletter circulation will pass 10,000 in the first half of 2009. Throughout 2008, the Green Lodging News website averaged more than 25,000 total visitors a month and more than 80,000 page views a month. It will not be long before Green Lodging News experiences its first 100,000-page-view month (it hit 91,111 in October).

During 2008, I had an opportunity to attend many trade shows and conferences where topics such as LEED, green certification programs, and engineering and technological advancements were frequently discussed. Thank you to all of the event planners who invited me to participate as a speaker, moderator or attendee. It was exciting to be part of each event and to witness the growth of interest in green lodging. I am looking forward to similar experiences in 2009.

GLN Plans for New Year

What does Green Lodging News have planned for 2009? Here are some of my ideas:

• I have had several requests for a Classifieds section. Early in 2009, Green Lodging News will be offering its readers an opportunity to post ads in categories such as “Help Wanted,” “Positions Wanted,” “For Sale,” etc. It will be the goal of Green Lodging News to reserve this section for environment-oriented ads.

• As with most successful start-ups, Green Lodging News is experiencing growing pains. It will be the goal of Green Lodging News to move from a home-based office to a space conducive to growth while maintaining its small carbon footprint. Green Lodging News will explore partnerships with organizations and individuals interested in helping to grow Green Lodging News.

• It will be the goal of Green Lodging News to significantly increase the growth rate and size of its Green Product & Service Directory. The Directory currently stands at 115 listings. If your company is a green supplier to the lodging industry but not yet part of the Directory, be sure to contact me. One out of every four visitors to Green Lodging News stops at the Directory!

• It will be the goal of Green Lodging News to increase participation in the recently launched “News Blog” and to add more contributing writers to the mix of guest columnists who have been contributing to Green Lodging News. If you have an idea for a guest column, be sure to contact me early in 2009.

• Allocating a section for video files is certainly an option in 2009. Is this something that you would be interested in? Second to being with someone in person, there is certainly no better way to show off your property or product. Please let me know your level of interest in this.
