LAKE ELMO, MINN.—PTAC MAGIC, which specializes in the installation and recycling of Packaged Terminal Air-Conditioning (PTAC) units for hotels and resort properties, announced that it is now offering free pickup of working PTACs to hoteliers across the United States. According to David Triemert, president of the Lake Elmo, Minn.-based company, the majority of PTAC air conditioners that are replaced with new units during hotel renovation projects may still have a useful life.

Triemert says he receives a number of phone calls each day, about half from motel operators, who are interested in inexpensive, used PTACs. Triemert tries to source local buyers for the used PTACs he receives but he has also put them on a truck and shipped them across several states.

“I get a lot of calls from mom-and-pop motel owners looking for used PTACS,” says Triemert. “Just like the big guys, they have seen sharp declines in occupancy and revenue in recent months and they are looking for any way to save a buck and they can pick up these units for pennies on the dollar,” he said. “The big brand hotels would never dream of replacing a failed PTAC with someone else’s discarded unit but the small independent motels cater to a different clientele wherein a noisy air conditioner is most likely already priced into their guestroom expectations.”

In situations where there is little or no demand from local buyers, Triemert will contact local community groups who can pick up the units and get them out to those in need.

“My father, since retiring twelve years ago, has knitted more than 50,000 winter hats and given them away to hospitals, schools and other charity groups, so why not try and give away an equal amount of air conditioners to the needy and less fortunate over the course of my lifetime,” Triemert says.
