KEY LARGO, FLA.—The Key Largo Resorts Marina was recently awarded Clean Marina Certification from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and The Clean Boating Partnership in recognition of their efforts in adopting environmentally friendly practices beyond standard regulatory requirements. The marine improvements and newly implemented programs help protect the waters, natural wildlife and clean facilities at Key Largo Resorts Marina. Some of Key Largo Resorts Marina’s initiatives include the use of oil absorbers in bilges, utilization of recycling centers, and the installation of multiple trash receptacles.

“We have developed a ‘best practices’ standard which all of our vendors follow,” said Candi MacDuff, Key Largo Resorts Marina dock master. “This certification not only applies to the marina, but to our entire facility team.”

The voluntary, non-regulatory Florida Clean Marina Program works with the marine industry to reduce pollutants and adopt safeguards that protect the cleanliness of Florida’s waterways. To receive the Clean Marina designation, marinas must comply with stringent environmental regulations and meet all Clean Marina Criteria. Clean Marinas adopt safeguards that help keep solvents, sewage and fuel out of the water while protecting manatees and other marine life that make the waterways their habitat.

Recognition of Environmental Commitment

“We are honored to receive this certification,” said Doug Dale, general manager of the Marina del Mar Key Largo. “The recognition demonstrates our commitment to protecting our local environment, and ensuring exceptional experiences for our overnight guests.”

Areas in the Clean Marina certification action plan include hurricane and emergency preparedness, fire safety, fueling practices, regulated storage tanks, waste disposal, engine maintenance and repair, boat cleaning, painting, storm water management, landscaping, used petroleum and other products, fish waste, sewage, sensitive habitat and endangered species, environmental management, and marina environmental quality.

Located at Mile Marker 100, Oceanside in Key Largo, Fla., the family of Key Largo Resorts includes three island-style properties—the Marina del Mar Key Largo, Ramada Limited Key Largo, and the Holiday Inn Key Largo.
