TORONTO—The Delta Chelsea Hotel in downtown Toronto was selected as the winner of the 2008 Energy & Environment Award by the Hotel Association of Canada. This award is given to a lodging property that has developed a culture towards integrating environmental management practices that improve everyday operations and the bottom line, while maintaining quality service and meeting guest expectations.

The Delta Chelsea has been at the forefront of hotel waste management through its strong partnership with Turtle Island Recycling. It has exceeded both industry standards and municipal targets in landfill diversion. While the City of Toronto set a target of 70 percent diversion for 2010, the Delta Chelsea actually diverted 76.31 percent of the waste stream to recycling in 2008.

Effective February 1, the Delta Chelsea implemented the LivClean Eco-Stay Program that provides Canadian hotels with leadership positioning in environmental action, accountability and responsibility. The program will support emission reduction projects across Canada, enable environmental initiatives within the hotel, assist in the development and expansion of the Hotel Association of Canada’s Green Key Program (Delta Chelsea Hotel has been awarded with the 4 Green ECOmmodation rating) and lastly, facilitate assessment and reporting of environmental impact. Each hotel guest will be asked to donate $1 plus GST upon check-out and all funds will be sent to LivClean to purchase carbon offsets on the hotel’s behalf.

“As a business operating in a large community such as Toronto, the Delta Chelsea recognizes and respects its corporate social responsibility to make it a stronger and better place to live,” says Josef Ebner, regional vice president and managing director, the Delta Chelsea Hotel. “As a quality organization, this is a key focus for our hotel and our company. To that end, we will always consider the environment in our decision-making, striving to take action that will positively impact the environment and that will go beyond meeting existing regulations and legislation.”
